The Lead Engineer will play a critical role in driving the technical design and application architecture across Bupa’s digital products, ensuring robust, scalable, and maintainable solutions. This role is responsible for overseeing the full development lifecycle, from architectural planning and design through to implementation, with a focus on delivering high-quality cloud-based applications built using .NET frameworks and Sitecore. In addition to leading the technical direction, the Lead Engineer will manage and mentor developers, ensuring adherence to best practices in coding standards, design patterns, and performance optimisation. This position combines both technical leadership and people management, fostering a collaborative and innovative development environment to meet business goals and exceed customer expectations.
Your Contribution:
- Lead the design, architecture, and development of technical solutions across Bupa’s digital products, ensuring scalability, performance, and adherence to industry best practices. Provide technical leadership for application solution design for new initiatives, collaborating with the architecture team, digital portfolio, and broader business stakeholders.
- Develop and plan long-term strategic architecture and hosting platform for Bupa’s digital platform, ensuring alignment with future business goals and technology advancements. Ensure the quality, consistency, and timeliness of Sitecore and .NET development work, delivering within project schedules and maintaining high standards.
- Define and implement development guidelines, setting best practices for application design, development, and architecture across the team.
- Review project requirements, develop technical solutions, and provide accurate estimations for resources and timelines.
- Lead, coach, and mentor developers, fostering technical growth, teamwork, and alignment with best practices.
- Contribute to the broader adoption and advancement of Sitecore across Bupa, sharing knowledge and standards with other departments and teams.
- Demonstrate expert-level competence in using development and automated testing tools within the Sitecore and.NET ecosystem.
- Continuously improve CI/CD processes, collaborating with the DevOps team to streamline development and deployment workflows.
- Monitor, guide, and assist developers in building and integrating automated tests to ensure high-quality deliverables.
- Stay informed on the latest .Net/Sitecore/Azure and broader digital technology trends, fostering innovation and creative solutions in digital product development.
- Use appropriate systems and tools to document technical designs and decisions, ensuring transparency and traceability of development processes.
- Ensure all activities and deliverables comply with Bupa’s policies, architectural principles, and functional/performance requirements.
- Identify and implement process, quality, and system improvements through continuous learning of new methodologies, technologies, and techniques, with management approval. Collaborate effectively with the wider Digital team, participating in cross-functional initiatives and providing mentoring and training to other team members.
Qualifications, training & Experience
- Tertiary qualification in an IT discipline or related field. Microsoft and Sitecore certifications are advantageous but not mandatory.
- 7+ years of hands-on commercial experience in developing web applications using Microsoft technologies (e.g., C#, ASP.NET MVC, Web API).
- 3+ years of extensive experience in developing Sitecore digital re-platforming projects.
- 2+ years of experience managing and mentoring a team of developers, fostering their growth, and driving a culture of collaboration, accountability, and technical excellence.
- Proven experience in application design and architecture, with expertise in multi-tier architectures. Ability to lead technical solutioning from conceptualisation through to implementation.
- Excellent client-side development skills, including front-end technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React.
- Database experience with SQL Server, Oracle, or other SQL databases; experience with NoSQL databases is advantageous.
- Experience with cloud services (Azure preferred), including cloud-based architecture, development, and deployment processes.
- Demonstrated knowledge of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing, particularly in cloud environments.
- Experience with Agile, Lean, and Human-Centered Design methodologies, able to adapt leadership style to fit different delivery methods.
- Familiarity with multiple delivery approaches (Agile, Waterfall, etc.), with the ability to guide teams in selecting and using appropriate methodologies.
Strong understanding of digital delivery cycles, project management, and resource planning to ensure timely and efficient product development. - Ability to define and enforce best practices in development, architecture, and code quality, promoting a consistent and high-standard technical environment.
