Data Retention Specialist - 12 Months fixed term contract - Melbourne
About the Role
Bupa APAC is executing an enterprise-wide Data Retention Program to ensure personal information collected, used, and stored across Bupa and related third-party systems is managed in line with legislative and regulatory obligations, consent frameworks, and business requirements.
As a Data Retention Specialist, you will play a critical role in supporting the Head of Data Retention to deliver enterprise-wide objectives across Legal, Technology (Enterprise Architecture & Data Governance), Change Management, Procurement, and Risk components.
Key Responsibilities
- Define, plan, and execute assigned tracks of the Enterprise Data Retention Stream in alignment with program strategy.
- Partner with Legal to deliver new data retention authorities and schedules for New Zealand Business Services, Aged Care, and Retirement Villages, leveraging compliance and consistency with Australian standards already produced.
- Deliver updates and additions to data retention and disposal authorities for Health Services Australia and other business areas.
- Produce Data Governance outputs to enable remediation streams to implement appropriate data treatments.
- Provide subject matter expertise and guide Business Analysts and SMEs on Data Governance for Data Retention.
- Collaborate with technical teams to support implementation of retention and disposal controls.
- Design and implement Data Retention Risk Controls, integrating them into the Data Governance operating model.
- Work with Procurement to embed data retention requirements in third-party contracts and monitor compliance.
- Advise on Unstructured Data discovery and implementation processes.
- Deliver Change Management outcomes, including enterprise education materials.
- Support the Head of Data Retention as required.
About You
- 5+ years experience in Data Governance and Data Management roles.
- 5+ years experience in projects or programs.
- Proven experience developing retention and disposal authorities and schedules.
- Strong knowledge of data retention obligations and ability to interpret legislation for business contexts.
- Familiarity with New Zealand legislation in aged care, retirement villages, and common company functions.
- Ability to support technical teams in applying retention and disposal patterns across structured and unstructured data environments.
- Skilled in facilitating workshops and stakeholder engagement.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to simplify technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
- Strong influencing and collaboration skills, with a consultative approach.
- Industry knowledge of aged care, retirement villages, health care, and insurance is highly desirable.
